There have been 27 recently confirmed cases of Measles in Maryland, and we should all be vigilant in ensuring that children East of the River are protected. Measles are one of the most contagious diseases in the world. It spreads easily through the air when someone coughs or sneezes, and the virus can stay in a room for up to two hours after that person has left. Because of this,  about 9 out of 10 people who are not vaccinated will catch measles if they are near someone who has it . For our children, measles is not just a rash and a fever; it is a serious illness that can lead to pneumonia or other dangerous complications. This is why it is so important to act now to protect your family.

 

The best and safest way to keep your child safe is to make sure they are up to date on their MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. This vaccine is very effective. two doses provide lifetime protection for almost everyone. You should also be aware that the overwhelming scientific evidence for the safety of these vaccines has been very firmly established. If your child is between 12 months and 4 years old, they need two doses. If you are unsure about your child’s vaccination status, or if you have any questions, please call your healthcare provider or DC Health right away. You can also get vaccinated at places like Mary’s Center, Unity Health Care, or local pharmacies enrolled in the Vaccines for Children program. Getting your child vaccinated is the most powerful step you can take to ensure they stay healthy and safe from this dangerous disease.
